American writer. Novel Billingsgate Shoal received the Edgar (Allen Poe) Award for best novel in 1983.

Born Evanston, Illinois. English majro at Denison University. MFA in Creative Writing U. of Iowa. Calls  Kurt Vonnegut his favorite teacher, mentor and best friend. At times high school teacher, sold for a publishing company and taught English at Western Carolina University since 1988. In 2010 a part-time resident of Black Mountain, NC, with permanent home in Waynesville, NC.
