review:

Last Sunday my wife and I spent an hour and a half engrossed in a traveling exhibit called "EMISSARIES OF PEACE: THE 1762 CHEROKEE AND BRITISH DELEGATIONS." For another two months you too can take it all in at the North Carolina Arboretum, just off the Blue Ridge Parkway west of Asheville.

No time? Too long a drive? Then you can either wait till the exhibit reaches a suitably large site near you. Or ... you can purchase an EXHIBIT CATALOG. Ours cost $10 at the Arboretum. You might pay $20 or more online or at a book store.

The exhibit and catalog are built around the published words of the delegation's escort, young Lieutenant Henry Timberlake. His study of 18th Century Cherokee life, during a three month stay before traveling with the Indians by sea to England, remains an invaluable source of information.

If Timberlake is not a household world in America today, that is not true of his subordinate, a sergeant who traveled with the delegation to England: Thomas Sumter. Not long after, Sumter married well in South Carolina. During the Revolution he rose to the rank of General -- a fighting American one at that. He was then sent repeatedly to both Houses of Congress. He lived to be 98 and his name is spread across the South, starting with Fort Sumter in Charleston harbor.

The EXHIBIT CATALOG reproduces contemporary maps, traces the delegation's route across southwest England to London, records the Cherokees' love of English theater and the attention given them by the press. Delegation leader was the great Cherokee chief Ostenaco, later personally known to future Presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.

In July 1762 Ostenaco and two other Cherokees met young (age 24) George III, peace having been made between the Indians and Britain during the reign of his grandfather, George II. Shortly after this visit, George III, "last King of America," issued the Proclamation Line of 1763. This enactment recognized Indians' sovereign rights and protected their lands against white encroachments. This Cherokee visit and its aftermath solidified tribal loyalty to the British Crown versus land grabbing Colonial rebels during the Revolution. All in all, a most instructive, colorful Exhibit! Costumes, texts, larger than life models leave a lasting positive impression. -OOO-
