I.  SHAKESPEARE  AND  RELIGION

an Adult Education Course for Montreat College (MCCALL)

October-November 2001

   co-taught by

    Frank Marvin and Patrick Killough

Introductory Comments by Patrick Killough [06/28/2001]

The idea for the course arose a few years after Patrick Killough had first read Peter Milward, S.J.'s SHAKESPEARE'S RELIGIOUS BACKGROUND (Chicago, Loyola University Press, 1973).

The rough division of labor is for Professor Frank Marvin (whose speciality is medieval and early modern English History) to do "historical background" while Patrick Killough focuses on religion in "Shakespeare."

Marvin, an ordained Presbyterian minister, and Killough, a Roman Catholic layman, will share and roam at will across "religion."

The course is presented off-campus in Black Mountain, NC's Highland
Farms Retirement Community in the spacious, comfortable Men's
Lounge.  Twelve hours of instruction and discussion will be spread across six meetings.

Each class will run from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.
during six consecutive Monday mornings:
October 8, 15, 22, 29 and November 5 and 12, 2001
Frank Marvin and Patrick Killough, and instructors of the other seven MCCALL courses will briefly introduce their forthcoming course on Wednesday October 3, 2001. Time is 2:00 p.m. Place is Gaither Hall Assembly Room on the Montreat, N.C. campus of Montreat College. At that time students will enroll in the MCCALL courses of their choice.

WHAT PATRICK KILLOUGH WILL PRESENT

Killough's plan for his six hours is to sketch and evaluate the main points made in Milward's SHAKESPEARE'S RELIGIOUS BACKGROUND while also looking more closely at religion in selected plays. Particular attention will go to  HAMLET, HENRY THE EIGHTH, MACBETH and MEASURE FOR MEASURE

More anon.
