HILAIRE BELLOC
Session ONE: Belloc and his
Times. Writings, especially Humorous.
A. Hilaire Belloc (1870 - 1953). Life. Times. Accomplishments. Friends and Foes. Hillaire Belloc was a universal man, gifted and creative in many fields. He was perhaps the greatest debater the Oxford Union ever produced. The simplicity and clarity of his writing is striking. His ability to simplify outlines of history gives us texts eminently suited for debate, research and learning. He states his positions and his caveats precisely. This makes it easier for readers to form their own views in dialog with him. Some consider him the most accurately prophetic "futurist" among English historians. B. Humor: THE BAD CHILD'S BOOK OF BEASTS (1897). MORE BEASTS FOR WORSE CHILDREN (1898) . A MORAL ALPHABET (1899). -OOO- under construction 03/30/2004 -- 10/28/2004 Patrick Killough Black Mountain, NC |
